Our Hikes Part 2

4th Hike of the Season

This was the biggest hike we have hiked to this point. We did it this last Saturday, July 10. It was fun and different because we hiked it with some friends, The Staker Family. It was a TON of fun!The hike we did was once again near Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon...it was the Lake Mary, Martha and Catherin hike!

This hike was amazing. We started out the morning cleaning the church building
then driving up the canyon and meeting the Stakers in the Brighton Ski Resort parking lot. This hike goes up under ski lifts for the first bit. You climb and change elevation over 1100 feetwhile doing this hike and it is WELL worth it! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I would have to say it was probably my favorite so far out of all the hikes.

Lyse struggled up the first bit of the mountain but once she knew we needed her to translate the birds she was much better. I wish I had the ability to put in words the awe, amazement and
wonder that is beheld going up to and at Lake Mary, Martha and Catherine. Serenity would be one good word but even that isn't enough.

We hiked through fields with flowers and trails still covered in snow. There was mud and streamlets crossing our path. Everything perfect for an outdoor adventure hike. Seriously, I LOVED it!

After hiking to Lake Catherine, we skipped some rocks than sat down near the lake and ate a fun picnic lunch. An ant crawled in Katy's pants and started to bite her so we then spent a few minutes locating and fixing our little ant problem. The entire time I kept saying, "Katy has ants in her pants and it is making her do the boogie dance"...she did NOT appreciate that one. Probably wasn't being the nicest mom but was trying to make her laugh and smile instead of cry.

There was a hill covered in snow that on the way up Ben had promised Lyse he would take her sledding down when we walked back. There was actually a LOT of hills covered in snow but when we reached that one, Ben fulfilled his promised. Katy at first didn't have the desire to go but once she saw Ben and Lyse up there she decided to join them. It did look like a LOT of fun. The blanket they rode down on even survived the sledding trip. Lyse and Katy want to hike there again just so they can go sledding again in July!

The hike down seemed to go so quickly. We did stop at Lake Mary long enough for the kids to throw in some rocks and then we did the "500 feet" detour to Dogg Lake - should say Dogg Swamp.

The hike took us about 4 1/2 hours, it was about 4 miles and as I said earlier you change elevation of over 1100 feet (a lot of it during the first bit). It was an AMAZING hike and a great day with great friends.

This hike you can backpack in and spend the night and you can also hike up to Albion basin and hike over into Little Cottonwood Canyon. To do that would be another mile or so. We are planning on doing that this year as well!

Tonight we did go up Little Cottonwood Canyon to see some Mountain Goats. We didn't see goats but we did however see a bull, cow and calf moose family all together! Now that was an amazing site and something that you don't see every day!!!! No real hiking occurred but we did walk the Quarry Trail at the base of the mountain.

So that is our Journeys up the mountains thus far. I am hoping we can add at least this many more gorgeous hiking trips before the summer is over!

Our Hikes Part 1

I decided that I needed to write specifically about the fun hikes our family has went on and enjoyed recently.

1st Hike of the Season

We started out with Donut Falls in June. I can't remember if it was the 19th or 26th of June (I am leaning towards the 19th). We had to wait that long cause June was just soooo cold and wet in the beginning.

Donut falls was a blast. The kids loved it.

We loved it. As we were driving up, we saw a moose and her calf in the swamps off the side of the road. We pulled over and took some pictures. It was so fun and amazing to experience wildlife like that only 20 minutes from our home.

The hike to donut falls is not really a hike...it is a nice little saunter through the woods. The girls
loved it. When we got to the water, we found that the donut part had actually collapsed. We climbed along the side (probably more than we should have with a 5 and 7 year old) and had a blast. The water was cold and rushing so we were careful, especially with the girls.

The hike took us about 2 hours but most of that was playing in the water. The overall length was about 1.5 miles round trip.

2nd Hike of the Season

This hike was to Ensign Peak. We went on June 30. We decided to go up right before the sun set so we could watch the sunset from the peak. That was such a GREAT idea. It was VERY VERY windy but it was also warm so the wind was welcomed.

Although the hike to Ensign Peak is not long...the incline felt soooo steep! The round trip hike is
only about 0.85 miles so it isn't far up...you just feel it in your legs!

Katy and Lyse both loved taking some pictures.
It was so fun being up on top of the peak, watching the sunset as a family. We talked to the girls a little about what Ensign Peak was and why it was so important.

Personally, I enjoyed being able to kiss my sweetheart as we watched the sunset...something we don't do often enough.

It was beautiful and we THOROUGHLY enjoyed the family time!
On the way back down, Lyse was on the look out for bear and deer. She was hoping we could catch some...but WAY too busy yelling for us to be quiet! I love that little thing. She just cracks me up!

3rd Hike of the Season

For this one we got a bit more bold. We decided we wanted to do something over 2 miles. We decided we would hike the trails that are above Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We had some subway points so we stopped and grabbed the footlong and headed up the canyon.

We ate our picnic lunch on some boulders just off the path,
next to silver lake then headed up the trail. Each person had their own water and a couple little snack in their bags.

After headed up the path, we came to a fork in the path and hadto pick between Twin Lakes and Lake Solitude. Another hiker said with children if we wanted to do the loop around Twin Lakes and Lake Solitude, it was easiest to go up to Lake Solitude first. Not knowing or caring about the difference, we headed up towards Lake Solitude.

Katy was our TROOPER! Lyse 5 minutes in was saying her legs hurt and honestly Katy did not once say she was tired, needed to rest, etc. When we asked Lyse to be the line leader, she did much better.
Some parts of the hike were just absolutely amazing. I love nature. I LOVE hiking along trails that you have trees rustling around you and the smell of pine in the air. It is invigorating and relaxing all at once!

Lake Solitude was rather dull and there wasn't really anywhere you could sit and enjoy. As we hiked around the lake to find the trail that led down to the Twin Lakes,

Ben found a cave. He named it the
"Candy Mountain Cave" and him and the girls went in. I was too much of a whimp and stayed and and took pictures...and chastising Ben of the danger of it all :)

The South side of the Lake had some snow and the girls and Ben enjoyed some snowball throwing. That is always fun to do in July! :)

After searching for a bit, we realized we weren't going to find the other trail. Both girls were getting tired, so we decided to head down the trail. On the way down the trail, Lyse informed us she could hear and interpret what the birds were saying. The birds told her that the bears were coming soon, so we needed to hurrying down the trail. As each bird would tweet and sing, she would interpret a fun little story.

As we reached the bottom of the trail I saw a Bull Moose get mad and start charging across Silver Lake. I yelled, "There's a moose" and we all ran to go see it. What an amazing way to finish the hike. The rangers informed us the moose was overall safe as long as we didn't provoke it because it wasn't mating season.
We walked along the boardwalks and walked RIGHT next to the Bull Moose! WOW!!! An experience of a lifetime and it seriously made for the perfect ending to the hike!

The overall hike took us about 3 hours (we hung out and played around Lake Solitude for a while) and we hiked about 3 miles that day.

Camping, hiking and all over the place.

No camping this weekend dang it! Ben forgot that we have the church building cleaning this Saturday...which means our little family will be over cleaning the church building at 7:30 am. There is no way I am gonna try and go camping with that :( While I am sad, I am also grateful for the opportunity to serve the ward and the Lord in the simple act of cleaning.

We are still hiking tomorrow though. I am kinda excited for this new hike. My friend told me about this hike and her family is coming along with us for it! The round trip hike is 4 miles and your elevation levels will change over 1100 feet while hiking! I don't know if I am strong enough for this but I am sure gonna try!

The hike we are doing is called the Mary, Martha and Catherine hike. You hike to Lake Mary, then Lake Martha and then the last and highest point, Lake Catherine..then circle back down. It is near Dog Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon. I have read a LOT about this hike and I am REALLY hoping I am prepared for it (and just as importantly that our girls are)! If we survive this one successfully then we will consider an overnight backpacking hike at the end of this summer. That hike is a total of 6 miles. We shall see!

I am so grateful that my family and I are able to experience and love these together! What a HUGE blessing my weight loss has been for my family!!! I love that I can hike these and enjoy these journeys now!

On weight loss: Today I stepped onto the wii scale to see 144. My BMI is 23. In 2 lbs I will be down to a BMI of 22. It will be 22.98 but it will be in the "perfect BMI 22 points" scale area. To achieve the perfect 22, I still have 8 lbs. I want to reach that point but honestly I don't know if I can or want to maintain it. I don't want to be overly skinny or obsessed with my weight...that is something that is really hard. I know I am struggling with my new body image and realizing that I am not fat. I am struggling with the fears of gaining back. Honestly I only want to reach the perfect BMI to reach it but in the end I would be happy at the weight I am now in the 140s. I feel content and happy here...but then there is that drive. That drive to have the "perfect" this or that is something I am going to have to face and deal with. The fear of gaining from the perfect weight. And honestly right now I have to also point out that I am a bit afraid I will just keep loosing until I am under weight. I have no appetite lately and my stomach hurts after most foods so I try and avoid eating...which leads to great weight loss, which I love but it also is a concern. I know this is all over the place...just my random ramblings...sorry!

Overall, life is good! I love my family and I am happy! What more can you ask for in life? There will always be trials...it is finding the happiness in them that is what makes life wonderful!

Mountains being close is the GREATEST thing about Utah

So much has happened...not much has changed.

We hiked to Ensign Peak last week and then Monday we hiked the 3 miles to Lake Solitude (above Silver Lake). We got the chance to be about 10 feet from a Bull Moose...no fence in between us either while walking around Silver Lake. It was an amazing experience.

I love hiking. I love enjoying the outdoors with my children. I am going to try and put together a little overnight camping trip this weekend. I think we would have a blast roasting smores, cooking yummy camp foods and enjoying the beautiful outdoors we have been so blessed with.

Keep your fingers crossed that I can pull it together! :)

I will get pictures posted of the fun hikes soon!

Ulcers

I have a stomach ulcer. I have managed to loose 5 lbs due to it but I am ready for it to be gone! I have a dr. appt and I am dreading it cause of money but looking forward to it because I need help with my stomach!

My. Stomach. HURTS!!!!

I also am having extreme anemia. The two are most likely related. I tried to give blood and they turned me away for lack of enough iron. I am starting on some new vitamins to help it all soon. I personally think that if they could just solve the ulcer, the anemia will solve itself! Until then I am tired, want more sleep and want to be able to eat, drink or basically anything without wanting to DIE from the pain that follows.

On a side note: I have been praying a LOT about our situation. I kept feeling like this week would have some good movement in the way of money. For the first time, I have been contacted from one of the MANY job applications I have turned it. It is actually a good job that I would be able to do from home. I don't want to get my hopes up to high but it is looking promising! I would love for it to be the company but I have come to see that the company is going to take some time to get up and running.

I Love My Calling!

Primary is THE. BEST. CALLING. EVER! I mean seriously...there is no other calling in the church in which you have innocent, amazing comments that just stun, amaze and bring tears from laughter!

Today was just one of those days!

First:

During singing time the chorister, Sister Purdie, asked the children "What did Jesus do?". The first response we all heard was, "He got screwed" we all blinked and Sister Purdie looked a bit like Deer in the Headlights. Sister Purdie responded, "He what?!?" and once again the presidency in the back hears the child's response, "He got screwed". All the Presidency is now FULLY curious in WHO was saying this as understanding crossed all our minds and Sister Purdie said, "Oh you mean the nails? He was crucified." "Uh YA!" was the response...like what else would I mean.

The presidency in the back as well as the teachers and pianist were all laughing so hard tears were streaming from our eyes! We then questioned WHO had said the comment. I let that go as I walked to the front to teach sharing time.

The lesson was going well and our sweet, ACTIVE, you can't change me and get me to conform Alexis stands up and walks up to me. I am rather used to this and continued the lesson. As I did this she grabbed my dressed and FLASHED the entire Primary. I grabbed my skirt back down and just stood there. I was blushing beet red, laughing from lack of knowing what to do and honestly just completely shocked. I kept looking at Brother Jensen thinking, "PLEASE oh PLEASE don't have been paying attention in that brief moment!"

I was also VERY thankful for garments and that they cover so well! I was even more grateful that I have lost weight. 1 year ago I didn't wear just below the knee dresses but if I had I would have been EXTREMELY mortified at the situation. I was glad I could just laugh it off!

After Sharing time was over, the Primary President walked up to me and said, "By the way, I thought I would let you know...Lyse was the one who made those comments!" Great! It was MY child!!

Now for the last bit...weight! Today was a momentous occasion in regards to my weight. This morning I stepped on the Wii Fit. I honestly didn't think I had lost much so when I saw the weight that had dropped off, I was in shock and awe!

I have now officially lost more weight than I currently weigh! My weight this morning was 149.5! I am sooo super de duper excited. I had the surgery 1 year ago on July 1st so in 1 year I have lost 150.4 pounds!

And the last announcement: I purchased a new pair of capris...since I only had 1 pair of pants that truly fit me. I grabbed to sizes...one was the hopeful, one was what I thought was the accurate. I was wrong! My hopeful jeans fit me PERFECTLY...and every pair of jeans I tried on were all the same size: size 8!

It honestly feels so great. I feel like me again. I am soooo grateful for the wonderful AMAZING blessing the Lord blessed me with in having my surgery. Even Ben commented the other day that I am more like the woman he married in the beginning: carefree, fun and outgoing. I like being that person a LOT more! I would also hope he could add that I understand life a bit more, I am a little less judgmental and I try harder to be the person Heavenly Father and Christ wants me to be. I know this may sound horrible and bad but honestly with my weight, I lost sight of a lot of that. My weight depressed and drag me down so I was so unhappy that I didn't have the capacity to feel the Spirit as I do now. I am SOOO Grateful for the change!! I am grateful that I can more easily express how I feel on the inside outwardly...and that helps me to feel even better on the inside.

My life is TRULY blessed!

P.S. I know several readers of my blog know me in real life. I know some are family, friends, ward members, etc. I know I talk about my gastric bypass on here a lot and I am NOT embarrassed by it...but I still struggle with it in "the open", the real world. I honestly fear that some are reading this than talking behind my back about it. I still fear those around judge. I can logically see it doesn't but I do get scared and afraid you think I am horrid and stupid for my choice. Please know that if you start to talk to me about it, I am not ignoring you! I am just trying to get used to the fact that my fears are much worse than reality! Thanks Love ya all!!

My Love

I just wanted to tell you...happy fathers day! I love and appreciate you so much. You are such an amazing father/dad/daddy!

Today as we were hiking and scrambling across the rocks, I watched as you carefully and meticulously took the hands of each of us to make sure we made it safely as well. You are an amazing protector!

I love to watch you wrestle with the girls. You are amazing at playing pretend with them...even though at times I get frustrated that I have to pretend that the floor is lava while trying to clean or cook dinner...at the same time I appreciate it so much! Our children have such vivid imaginations because you help encourage it constantly!

I love to watch the tender moments of when you dance with the girls in the living room...those are my favorite family moments!

You always take the time to teach our daughters. Many times I haven't even THOUGHT about taking it as a teaching moment...you are there, teaching.

You are an amazing Patriarch and spiritual leader in our family. I KNOW I couldn't do it without your help. Family prayer, church questions, gospel principles...all those things you try so hard to encourage. I watch you SHOW your testimony and at the same time instilling those principles in our daughters' testimonies too.

I LOVE YOU! You are my love! You are amazing! You are my world!!
